LEAVING is a direct response to the Sutherlan Estates archives of the 19th century Clearances. I wanted to make a piece that was a memorial to the cleared people - we still know their names, whether they were married or single, how many children they had, where they lived and where they went to. The water means change and transformation, also sorrow. The central text panel starts off at the top in good order, listing townships and counting people but gradually disintegrates as the community disintegrates, scattering place names and people's names, still hanging by threads to the past, falling into the future.
